Passage: Romans 16:1–16

Honoring One Another
Why do we waste pages of sacred Scripture on all these names in Romans 16? The church is called to see the nations worship Jesus, and this big vision can only be fulfilled together. Whether Jew or Gentile, male or female, wealthy or poor, married or single, we need everyone to accomplish God’s purposes together. That is why Romans 16 begins with a long list of names. These names encompass a great diversity of ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, and genders, united in their diversity. If we demand recognition for ourselves, though, diversity is doomed. Instead of demanding recognition we give honor. Romans 16:1–16 honors sacrifice, leadership, work, and family.
