HOW DID YOU SEE GOD THIS WEEK AS YOU FOLLOWED HIM?

WHAT DID GOD SAY IN HIS WORD?

Opening Question:

Thinking about you’re the past year, how have you seen God go before you into situations you didn’t expect?

God went before the Israelites as well as he led them out of Egypt. Let’s read again that portion of the story from Sunday:

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near. For God said, "Lest the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt." 18 But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones with you from here."

20 And they moved on from Succoth and encamped at Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

Reflect Together:

How do you think it felt for the Israelites when they turned from the most direct path to the Promised Land?

Imagine Moses gathering Joseph’s remains to finally bring them back to the Promised Land (13:19). What would it feel like to see a promise from God that was over 400 years old finally coming true?

WHAT DID GOD SAY TO ME THROUGH HIS WORD?

Like the Israelites turning from the path through Philistia (13:17-18), what unexpected turns has your life taken? Have you been able to see God’s hand in those turns?

Joseph’s God-given expectation was that his family would one day return to the promised land (13:19). Has God ever laid a particular prayer on your heart that took a long time before you received an answer? How did you hold on to trusting in God while you waited?

WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT?

Thinking about how God has gone before us individually and as a church ought to inspire trust in him for the next callings he places into our lives. Where is God leading us next as a church and you individually? Consider together how you can deepen your trust in God and take a next step in that calling.
