HOW DID YOU SEE GOD THIS WEEK AS YOU FOLLOWED HIM?

WHAT DID GOD SAY IN HIS WORD?

Opening Question:

Right now there are major divisive challenges in our nation, while at the same time much of what we enjoyed has been shut down. We’re caught between the catastrophic and the day-to-day mundanity. Are you feeling more caught up in the major world events, or trudging through your day-to-day tasks? Somewhere in-between?

Paul encouraged the church that the glory of God was seen in their mundanity in our passage from Sunday. Let’s read it again:

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Reflect Together:

Paul describes the church using three mundane terms in verse 15: “household”, “church”, and “pillar/buttress”. What do these terms tell us about the community of followers of Jesus?

Paul summarizes the gospel of Jesus in verse 16, calling it “the mystery of godliness”. Are there any phrases/descriptions in verse 16 that don’t make sense to you? Why do you think Paul finishes this section with this gospel summary? How does it relate to the preceding chapters?

WHAT DID GOD SAY TO ME THROUGH HIS WORD?

Have you seen the glory of God in the mundane places of life? What has that looked like?

What does it look like for you to pursue godliness in the mundane?

WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT?

One of the best ways to see the glory of God in the mundane is to pay attention for it and to make a note if/when you do see Him. Consider as a group whether this week you all could pay extra attention to see if you can notice God’s glory in the mundane, make notes about it, and share next week.

Is there a part of your mundane routine where you are struggling to pursue or display godliness? Consider with your group how you can better display God’s glory in your day-to-day tasks.
