Promises Fulfilled
Good things usually come in better packages; the quality of the packaging ought to reflect their contents. But God doesn’t operate that way. God usually puts His greatest glory in the most mundane packages. The great king, David, was the runt of his family. The great prophet Moses had anger issues and couldn’t speak well. Luke 2:1–7 remind us that the glory of God comes to us in unexpected packaging; the Son of God was born as a baby in the manger. Indeed:
“The Almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby, unable to do more than lie and stare and wriggle and make noises, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child. . . . The more you think about it, the more staggering it gets. Nothing in fiction is so fantastic as is this truth of the Incarnation.”[1]
How do we keep from overlooking the glory of God because of its mundane packaging? We have to engage our ears and listen (Luke 2:8–14), pursue with our feet (2:15–16), proclaim with our mouths and ponder in our heart the promises of God (2:17–20).
