Witness According to the Word of God
Is Christianity colonialist? Does the book of Joshua justify conquering other nations in the name of God? Against a colonialist reading of Joshua, the story of Rahab in Joshua 2 sticks out like a sore thumb. If Joshua is simply a colonialist book to detail the subjugation of foreign peoples by the power of God, then the call to take the land in chapter 1 should be followed by entering the land in chapter 3. But Joshua 2 is surprising, spelling out the story of the unexpected faith of a Canaanite prostitute Rahab. Why is this here? Joshua is not a story of unquestioning colonialist conquest of foreign peoples; Joshua is a story of the greatness of the God of heaven and earth showing his glory to all the nations. And Joshua 2 shows how our steps of obedience according to the Word of God demonstrate how God protects his people to prepare a heart of faith and bring salvation to a family.
