HOW DID YOU SEE GOD THIS WEEK AS YOU FOLLOWED HIM?

WHAT DID GOD SAY IN HIS WORD?

Opening Question:

Have you ever felt belittled or despised? Have you ever seen someone else made to feel that way? What happened?

Paul encourages Timothy who would have been looked down on because of his youth to set an example for the believers, exercise his gifts, and treat them as family in our passage from Sunday. Let’s read it again together:

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

5:1 Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Reflect Together:

Why would setting the believers an example in conduct, speech, etc., change their acceptance of Timothy’s teaching? Would something like that work today?

How did Timothy’s spiritual gifts come about? Do all spiritual gifts come to believers in the same manner? How do you know?

What’s the difference between rebuking someone and encouraging them? What has been your own experience receiving rebukes or encouraging teaching?

WHAT DID GOD SAY TO ME THROUGH HIS WORD?

Are you living in such a way that you are “setting an example” that can overcome people’s spite or doubt? Are you trying to? What is going well? What is holding you back?

What are your spiritual gifts? How do you know? Are you exercising them?

WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT?

Consider together what next steps God is calling you into regarding speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Make a plan to grow in setting an example.

These are unusual times. God may have a new way for you to consider exercising your spiritual gifts. Brainstorm together about what it would look like to exercise your gifts in this pandemic and election season.
