HOW DID YOU SEE GOD THIS WEEK AS YOU FOLLOWED HIM?

WHAT DID GOD SAY IN HIS WORD?

Opening Question:

Considering this week’s Lent practice of “Scripture before Phone”, what is your normal morning routine? How might spending time with the Lord before picking up your phone change your capacity to love others?

Let’s read our passage from Sunday again:

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reflect Together:

Is this opening to the letter a strange opening or consistent with Paul’s other letter introductions? Flip to some of Paul’s other letter openings and compare.

What is the situation of the book of first Timothy? Where is Paul when he writes this (see 2 Tim. 1:16-17) and what is his situation? Does Paul expect to survive much longer (see 2 Tim. 4:6-9)? Given the extreme situation of Paul’s writing, does that impact our view of the consistency of his letter’s opening with his other letters? What does this tell us about Paul?

WHAT DID GOD SAY TO ME THROUGH HIS WORD?

Do you feel like you have a calling on your life from God like Paul does? Why or why not?

Are there people in your life you would consider your “beloved children” in Christ (apart form biological children)? If so, who are they and how did they become that dear to you? If not, how might you pursue forming this kind of relationship with someone?

WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO ABOUT IT?

As you practice “Scripture before Phone” this week, invite God during that reading/listening/prayer time to help you live out your calling that day, and to help you grow in love toward those who could become your “beloved children” in the faith.
