HOW DID YOU SEE GOD THIS WEEK AS YOU FOLLOWED HIM?

WHAT DID GOD SAY IN HIS WORD?

Opening Question:

Have you ever had a spiritual mentor and if so, what kind of influence did that person have on your life?

Paul is nearing the end of his life and imparting his last words to Timothy. Paul is reminding Timothy of what his life has been about in order to encourage him to persevere.

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra-- which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Reflect Together:

How has Timothy followed Paul’s footsteps in v.10-11?

(Ans: It’s not only about what Paul taught, but also what Timothy “caught” from Paul’s purpose, manner of life, and how he endured persecution.)

Why do you think Paul reminded Timothy of what happened to him at Antioch (where he was kicked out of the city for preaching the gospel (Acts 13:50)), Iconium (where he was almost executed by stoning (Acts 14:5)), and at Lystra (where they actually did stone Paul and leave him for dead (Acts 14:19))?

(Perhaps to encourage Timothy that the Lord delivered him from these hardships and to warn him that he, along with other godly Christians will also face persecution).

What power does Scripture have in v.15-17?

(Teaching: show us the way. The path.  Reproof:  helps us see when we get off the way. Correction:  getting back on the path. Shows us where the path is, how do get back on it.  Training:  Keep us going on the path.)
